“Tommy Yang’s 115th Dream”
Dir. Co-Editor. Gaffer.
“Today, Tomorrow, and Yesterday too, the flowers are dyin’ like all things do”
Shot in my second year at TMU, “Tommy Yang’s 115th Dream” is a key example of my affinity for exploring the intrinsic connection between cinema and dreams. The goal here was to use methodical camera movement and disorienting editing techniques to capture the central character’s fractured state of mind. It's a project that changed radically in form and approach throughout each stage of production, a process that taught me that true “vision” is something that grows with a film.
Co-Dir. Co-Editor. Gaffer.
“Sanders & Sanders Present : ”
In life one can always count on the immutable constants: family, death, and insurance premiums. Watch all three collide when struggling life insurance salesman “Cousin Phil” hires a camera crew to document the wake of the Sanders family’s recently deceased patriarch.
Sanders & Sanders presents; was a single day shoot, made for a tech class assignment that truly blossomed into something special. Working with Co-Director Maya Chariandy, we casted a mix of real actors, a handful of friends, and my entire immediate family; a blend that provided a masterclass in directing performance. This project is where I learned to work quickly and spontaneously, delivering a final product that is just as joyous and fun as was the process of making it. It is the film of mine that is personally imbued with the most sentimental value, one that will only grow as I age.”
“The Review ”
Co-Dir. Co-Writer. Co-Editor
The Review is a “Film Mix-Tape” intended to explore disjointed photography and short film material through an anthology format. Originally conceptualised as a maganize, Co-director Mason Cline and I wanted a creative project fueled by a “no restrictions” approach that could be shot spontaneously over the course of a semester in collaboration with our friends and frequent collaborators. The process of conception boiled down to a very simple dynamic; “I have a random idea that I think you’ll like, so let's make it… now.”
Screened at Bystander World Premiere, presented by Parsceptchien pictures, Pylon Collective, Bevy, Cerveza Modelo, & Waves Studi0
Dir. Writer. Cinematographer. Editor. Gaffer.
“Machine ”
“Machine” is an experimental short film that I shot and directed on a 16mm Bolex during my second semester at TMU. I filmed it in my grandparents basement, lighting it with a single tungsten solarspot. It exhibits my interest in mood and high-contrast visuals. I put a lot of effort into creating a layered soundscape that could contort a relatively innocuous setting into something more sinister and unsettling.
Screened at the TMFF 2023 Daytime screening.
Dir. Writer. Cinematographer. Editor. Gaffer.
“Chiaroscuro”
After a face off with a hungry dog, a shadowy figure must travels through an world plunged in darnkess in order to finally see the light.
An early short film of mine from highschool that I made entirely on my own. Chiaroscuro represents one of my first forays into the world of filmmaking. This project was where I discovered how to use abstraction and the surreal as a means of self-expression. To this day I am still proud of its mysterious atmosphere and striking visuals.
